Chewalla Baptist Church is a Southern Baptist congregation affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention and the Shiloh Baptist Association. We have adopted a statement of faith known as Baptist Faith and Message 2000.
Our mission is summed up in three brief phrases: Loving God, Loving People, and Making Disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Chewalla Baptist Church is located in Chewalla, Tennessee, and was organized around 1902 by a few farming families who worshipped together. The church has been an important part of the community for over 100 years.
The first church building was located about ¼ mile from the existing church building.
During the early 1900s, a visiting preacher came once a month to lead worship services, and on the other Sundays, the church members met for Bible study. From 1925 to 1935, a preacher arrived in Chewalla by train, pastored the church for 3 months, and moved on.
The first Chewalla Baptist Church Homecoming was held in 1934. Homecoming is currently celebrated annually on Sunday during the first weekend in May.
Beginning in 1935, preachers came from Union University to hold worship services twice a month. In 1946, just after World War II came to an end, Bro. Harry L. Winters became the church’s first full-time pastor.
Our current pastor, Bro. Richard Doyle, became pastor in 1997 and holds the record for longest tenure.
The church men’s softball team has been very successful through the past 40 years having won many championships including 5 state championships.
We have classes and ministries for every age group. We host several activities for the community each year including Chewalla Basketball League, Vacation Bible School, the Fourth of July Picnic in the Park, the Fall Festival with Trunk or Treat, and The Sportsman’s Banquet.
